### Course Objectives

We will give an historical analysis of some mathematical theories.

### Course Content

- Methodological introduction to the history of mathematics.
- The pre-euclidean mathematics and the Greek mathematics (Ippocrates of Chio, Eudossus, Euclid, Apollonius, Archimedes, Menelaus, Tolomeus, Pappus, Diophantus)
:analysis of the respective works.
- The mathematical corpus reconstruction during the Humanism and the Renaissance in west (Maurolicus, Commandinus, Ch. Clavius)
- Algebra and geometry between the XIV and XV centuries (Cardanus, Tartaglia, Bombelli, ViÃ¨te, Stevin, Descartes, Desargues): analysi of the respective works
- The indivisibles: Valerius, Galilaeus, Cavalieri and Torricelli
- The origins of the calculus: Newton and Leibnitz and the first developments
- The origins of the calculus of variations: Bernoulli brothers, Euler, Lagrange

### Prerequisites and Learning Activities

A good knowlwdge of topics developed during the courses of first degree and during the first year of the magisterial degree.
