Course Objectives
Ability of dealing with the design of controllers for systems described by nonlinear differential equations, of both the
ordinary and functional type. Ability of simulating the designed control system and of testing its validity.
Course Content
- Matlab simulation of linear time invariant systems. Matlab instrumentation for linear control synthesis.
Matlab simulation of nonlinear systems. Recalls on nonlinear control systems theory:
linearizing feedback, zero-dynamics, state observers.
Input-to-State Stability (ISS).
Integral Input-to-State Stability. Lyapunov-Sontag criterium for ISS.
Actuator disturbance attenuation. Artstein theory for controller project
by means of Lyapunov functions. Sontag’s universal formula for the construction of a stabilizer.
Practical stabilization in the sample-and-hold sense by means of steepest descent feedbacks
(continuous or not). Synthesis of controllers for a chemical stirred tank reactor (CSTR):
PI controller; nonlinear state feedback controller; nonlinear estimated state feedback controller;
nonlinear state feedback controller with actuator disturbance attenuation.
Matlab simulation of the CSTR control system. Retarded Systems. Stability. ISS.
Lyapunov-Krasovskii criterium for stability. Methods based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMI)
for stability. Implementation in Matlab of LMIs. Criterium for ISS.
Elementary theory of nonlinear feedback for retarded systems. Stabilization.
Input-to-State Stabilization. State observers. Glucose-Insulin System. Modelling.
Synthesis of Controllers for glycemia regulation by intravenous insulin administration.
Simulation in Matlab of the Glucose-Insulin control system.
LMI methods for stability analysis of neutral systems.
Matlab implementation of LMIs for examples of circuit models.
Prerequisites and Learning Activities
Basics of linear algebra and
mathematical analysis.
Basics of automatic control theory and informatics.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Oral. Students must show the software used for the simulation of systems dealt with during the course.
