Course Objectives
The goal of this module is to provide the fundamental set of concepts, techniques and standards that relate to modern telecommunications networks and to the Internet world.
On successful completion of this module, the student should obtain a fairly complete vision of the Internetworking world and the ability of building, analyzing, managing, and troubleshooting simple networks.
As an option, students can obtain the Cisco CCNA Exploration "Network Fundamentals" certification.
Course Content
- Topics of the module include:
Telecommunication services and networks. Transfer modes. Protocol architectures and the ISO/OSI model. PDH and SDH multiplations. Circuit and packet switching. FEC and ARQ error control techniques. GSM networks. Networks convergence. QoS, fault tolerance, scalability, security. LAN and WAN networks. The TCP/IP protocol architecture. LAN and WAN physical and data link standards and protocols. IP networking, addressing, routing. TCP and UDP fundamentals. Commonly used application protocols of the TCP/IP suite. Basic configuration of Cisco routers and switches. Cabling, configuration, analysis, and troubleshooting of simple networks.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
Multiple-Choice Multiple-Answer assessment, oral exam and discussion of a project work. Students are encouraged to carry out the project work in team.
