Course Objectives

The course introduces the fundamental concepts necessary for designing and implementing and querying (by means of SQL) relational databases.

Course Content

Models: Relational model. The Entity-Relationship model.
Languages: Relational algebra. The relational calculus. SQL.
Methodologies. The conceptual design. The logical design od relational databases.
The relational tecnology. Introduction to the usage of available relational database managenent systems.

On successful completion of this course, the student should

On successful completion of this module, the student should have profound knowledge of the relational database technology.
He/she has knowledge and understanding about the design of real-life relational databases.
Understand and explain how to create, update and querying RDBs by using SQL. Understand how it is possible to preserve the consistency of the contents of a RDB through the implementation of intra-/inter-constraints. Demonstrate skill in the design and ability to manage RDBs by using SQL.
Knowing how to communicate his basic knowledge to others in the job opportunities that will arise.
Demonstrate capacity for reading and understand other texts on related topics

Prerequisites and Learning Activities

Fundamentals about programming languages.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

Written and oral exam.
