To study elementary locomotion mechanisms
Course Content
- Affine deformation and stretch. Contractions and elastic deformations. Kroner-Lee decomposition. Actin-myosin contraction. How muscles work. Basic locomotion mechanisms: flying, swimming, crawling. Motion over a viscous substrate. Equation of motion for a two affine block model. The Bingham viscosity model compared to the Newtonian viscosity model. Contraction cycles. Adhesion and sliding in snails and slugs. Contraction waves and speed characterization in snails and earthworms. Stick-slip motion and crawling modes. Equivalence of complementary contractions.
Learning Outcomes (Dublin Descriptors)
On successful completion of this course, the student should
- On successful completion of this module, the student should have knowledge of the basic locomotion mechanisms of small organisms and cells.
- On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to undestand some natural phenomena in biology about locomotion mechanisms and conceive artificial devices inspired by them.
- On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to compare different locomotion mechanisms and make an assessment about their ability to perform a task.
- On successful completion of this module, the student should have got the basic language in biomechanics necessary for him or her to take part in a discussion on the subject with both biologists and engineers.
- On successful completion of this module, the student should be able to browse quickly or read carefully both technical and scientific papers or to attend conferences and seminars to increase his knowledge by choosing topics he may be interested in.
