Abstract: The European Railways Train Management Systems (ERTMS) - a world's benchmark in terms of safety and efficiency -  is  targeting a full driverless capability. Similarly automotive industry is investing for developing  cars with different level of autonomy. Cars and Trains must comply to very stringent safety requirements and historically rail industry has got a safety culture consolidated in years of operations and standardization. On the other hands, car industry  can leverage on a much bigger market to reduce costs and make innovations affordable to people. Breakthrough innovations embraces mainly vehicle's positioning and communications technologies that train and car manufacturers will have to adopt.
Mastering these technologies backed by a safety requirement is one of the most important challenges for autonomous vehicles. This seminar aims to discuss these topics making reference to the innovation landscape launched in L'Aquila with the EMERGE initiative.

Bio: Francesco joined Ansaldo STS (now Hitachi Rail STS) in 2011 and is responsible for satellite operations in the EMEA business unit.
He is  Director General of Radiolabs, a leading research center participated in by Universities of l'Aquila, Roma TRE, Tor Vergata and Hitachi Rail STS, WestPole.
From 2005 he was the Chief New Initiatives at Telespazio and previously Vice President Multimedia Business Unit with Alenia Spazio and microwave antenna engineer at Contraves.
He obtained a doctoral degree in Electronic Engineering from the Politecnico of Turin in 1978 and a post-graduate Master in Applied Electromagnetism from University La Sapienza in Roma in1980. In 2012 he was awarded the Finmeccanica Innovation Prize and the Italian Prize of Prizes with a satellite-based innovation for train control systems.

The seminar is promoted by the Ex-EMERGE centre of excellence and is part of the Wireless Communications course.
