Concettina Buccella received her laurea degree in Electrotechnical Engineering from the University of L’Aquila, Italy in 1988 and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in 1995. In 1991, she joined the University of L’ Aquila where she is a Full Professor in Power Converters, Electrical Machines and Drives.

She has been a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1992 and a Senior Member since 2003. She has been appointed Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics in 2015 and Associate Editor of the IEEE System Journal in 2019, moreover she is a Member of the Editorial Board of International Journal of Smart Grid. She has served as a Guest editor some Special Issues of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics on Methods and Systems for Smart Grids Optimization and Recent Advances in Multilevel Inverters and Their Applications.

Her research interests cover modeling of electrical systems, modulation techniques, electromagnetic compatibility, application of power converters to smart grids, distributed generation, industry and e-transportation. On these topics she has published over 200 papers including 47 journal papers, receiving 4072 citations; her H-Index is 20 (Scopus, Jan 2020).

Concettina Buccella has been a co-recipient of the 2012 Best Paper Award of the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics for the paper “Smart Grid Technologies: Communication Technologies and Standards”, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, vol. 7, no. 4, pp.529-539, Nov. 2011 (1588 citations by Scopus), moreover, she has been a co-author of some other highly cited papers in the area of smart grids, such as: “A Survey on smart grid potential applications and communication requirements”, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, vol. 9, no.1, pp. 28-42, February 2013 (718 citations by Scopus), “A Review of Architectures and Concepts for Intelligence in Future Electric Energy Systems”, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, vol. 62, no. 4, pp. 2424-2438, April 2015 (268 citation by Scopus), “Smart grid and smart homes: Key players and pilot projects”, IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine, vol. 6, no. 4, pp. 18-34, December 2012 (126 citations by Scopus). She has been a co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at the International Conference on Smart Grids (icSmartGrids), Prefectural Art Museum, Nagasaki, Japan, December 4 -6, 2018 for the paper “Mixed Harmonic Elimination Control for a Single-Phase 9-Level Grid-Connected Inverter”, and a co-recipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2020 IEEE 9th International Power Electronics and Motion Control Conference (IPEMC2020-ECCE Asia) for the paper “Super Twisting Sliding Mode Controller for PMSM fed with Multilevel Inverter for E-transportation”.
In 2019 she received the “STAR Reviewer Award” for her outstanding service to the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics.

She has been invited by the Ministry of Energy and Water of the Republic of Angola to be a Plenary Speaker at the International Conference of Energy and Water, September 25-27, 2013, Luanda, Angola, moreover, she has been a Plenary Speaker at the 2018 International Conference on Renewable Energy Research and Applications, October 14-17, 2018, Paris, France and at the 14th International Conference on Development and Application Systems, May 24-26, 2020, Suceava, Romania (virtual conference). In September 2020 she has been invited to take a Lecture within the frame of celebrations for the first century of the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), China.

Since many years she has been a member of the Renewable Energy Systems Committee, the Power Electronics Committee and the Smart Grids Committee of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society; regarding the last one, she was a founding member; moreover, for many years, she has been a member of the Electrostatic Process Committee of the IEEE Industry Applications Society.

She has been the Chair of the Renewable Energy Systems Technical Committee of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (2017-2018).

She has been a Technical, Scientific or Advisory Board Member of many IEEE conferences, moreover, she has been a Track Chair of numerous editions of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society Conference (IECON), the International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE), the IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology (ICIT), the International Symposium on Environment Friendly Energies and Applications (EFEA), the International Conference on Smart Grids, Green Communications and IT Energy-aware Technologies (ENERGY), the International Symposium on Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Automation and Motion (SPEEDAM), the International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC), the AEIT Automotive Conferences, the AEIT Annual Conference, the International Conference on Clean Electrical Power Renewable Energy Resources Impact (ICCEP), the IEEE International Workshop on Intelligent Energy Systems “Managing the Complexity in Energy Systems” (IWIES).
She has been the Treasurer of the 2016 Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IECON2016).

In 2020, she has been Track Chair for Power Systems and Smart Grid at the 29th IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE), International Program Committee Member of the IEEE-PES-ISGT-Europe-2020 and of the 10th International Conference on Innovative Smart Grids Technologies, a Special Session Chair at the International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG) and of the International Conference on Industrial Electronics for Sustainable Energy Systems (IESES).

In 2020 she has also been an evaluator of research and professional activity of research-oriented institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences for the period 2015–2019 (equivalent to ANVUR).

Concettina Buccella has been a Co-Founder and, from 2012 till 2017, the C.E.O. of DigiPower Ltd., a University of L’ Aquila spin-off, and an "Innovative SME" active in the field of power electronics for industrial automation, robotics, smart grids, and e-transportation. Under Concettina Buccella's Scientific Coordination, the company was awarded by Ministry of Industrial and Economic Development of Italy with two distint R&D projects:
1) "COMODES": "Modular Multilevel Converters for integration in innovative energy contexts of Distributed generation and Sustainable Electric Mobility" (24 months duration, 2017-2018): DigiPower activities concerned with (i) the development of mathematical models of Static Compensators (STATCOM) and electrical networks in which they must be inserted, (ii) the definition of criteria for the design and construction of STATCOMs with modular multilevel structure (both HW and SW), (iii) the realization of demonstrators of modular multilevel converters composed of up-to 48 20 kW "H-Bridge" modules, each one equipped with its own DSP and measurement systems for electrical quantities, and with a central control and communication card with FPGA, CPLD and DSP, capable of control and coordination of the 48 modules and of communication with outside world through Ethernet, USB and, optionally, WiFi interface.
2) "RELAX":"Robot Enable for Load Assistive relaXation" project, that is a newly approved industrial research and experimental development project. The final goal of the research is the realization of a robot co-worker (Co-Bot). DigiPower will develop electronic converters for powering the actuators (robotic and non-robotic) and the charging system (with cable and without cable). "Wide Band Gap" (WBG) gallium nitride (GaN) power components will be used both in the converters for powering the motors and in the converters for recharging the batteries and for other auxiliary functions.
