Mathematics for Signal Processing: a new generation of algorithms for the decomposition and analysis of nonlinear and nonstationary signals

Abstract:
The analysis and decomposition of nonstationary and nonlinear signals is of high theoretical and applied interest nowadays. Classical problems in this direction of research are, for instance, the identification of hidden frequencies, the extraction of quasi-periodicities and trend from a multicomponent nonstationary noisy signal. Linear techniques like Fourier and Wavelet Transform proved to be limited in this regard. For this reason, in the last decades, new nonlinear methods have been developed. In particular, the groundbreaking Empirical Mode Decomposition algorithm, aka Hilbert-Huang Transform, and similar methods. In this seminar we will give an overview of this kind of methods and present some of last advances obtained in the field. Real life applications as well as some of the most intriguing open questions will be discussed.
Short Bio:
Antonio Cicone is a "Ricercatore di Tipo B" in Numerical Analysis at the Department of Information Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics, University of L’Aquila. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of L'Aquila in 2011, he spent a few years as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the USA at Michigan State University first, and then Georgia Institute of Technology. He returned to Italy as a Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Research Fellow of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica in 2014. His research interests are currently focused on an emerging field of research which is at the intersection of Numerical Linear Algebra and Signal Processing. In particular, he works on the development and mathematical analysis of new algorithms for the decomposition and time-frequency analysis of signals, and their applications to other fields of research, like Physics, Economy, Engineering, and Medicine.
